Twelve-year-old Nisha lives in the urban settlement of Sangam Vihar, Delhi, with her family of nine siblings. Following the untimely death of her father, the family lost its sole source of financial support. With no formal education or steady employment, her mother took up bangle beautification work at home to keep the household running. As the meager earnings barely covered two meals a day, Nisha and her siblings had to join in the labor, leaving no room to think about schooling. "We were working all day just to arrange two meals. We had completely lost hope of ever studying again." During a community outreach survey in Sangam Vihar, Deep Welfare Organisation (DWO) field mobilizers identified Nisha’s family. Understanding their financial constraints, the team convinced her mother to dedicate just two hours a day to foundational learning at the Deep NFE Centre. Today, Nisha and her brother are regular attendees, showing remarkable progress in reading and basic numeracy. Inspired by their growth, her mother has decided to enroll them in formal schooling, while Nisha now motivates her other siblings to step into learning.
