he seminar brought together government officials, academicians, policy makers, field functionaries, legal and medical experts, social activists, NGOs, media representatives and other stakeholders to deliberate on the challenges affecting the lives, dignity, safety and development of the girl child. The discussions emphasized that protecting and empowering girls requires a collective and sustained effort. Key areas highlighted included strengthening the implementation of anti-dowry measures, preventing child marriage through compulsory marriage registration, celebrating the birth of the girl child, promoting girls’ education, and encouraging the active participation of local institutions such as Zila Panchayats. The seminar also drew attention to immediate priorities such as gender equality, women’s education, healthcare, safety in public transport, women’s safety cells, sensitization campaigns, cybercrime prevention, crisis management centres, and recognition of role models and supportive families. A significant focus was placed on the role of civil society organizations (CSOs). As independent, voluntary and non-profit institutions working alongside communities, CSOs can play an important role in creating awareness, influencing social attitudes, supporting vulnerable groups and strengthening the implementation of government initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP). The seminar provided an important platform for dialogue and collaboration, while strongly advocating for innovative and effective mechanisms to address gender-based discrimination, inequality and violence against girls, and to respond to the declining child sex ratio. The participation of diverse stakeholders reflected a shared commitment: every girl deserves to be born, protected, educated, respected and empowered. DEEP remains committed to building awareness and strengthening collective action for the protection and empowerment of the girl child.

State-Level Workshop on "Protect Girl Child & Promote Adoptions"

On 19th November 2010, Deep Welfare Organisation, in collaboration with the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR), organized a full-day consultative workshop titled "Protect Girl Child & Promote Adoptions" at the India International Centre (IIC Annexe), Max Mueller Marg, New Delhi. Organized on the birth anniversary of Late Smt. Indira Gandhi, the workshop served as a state-level platform bringing together policymakers, statutory bodies, legal experts, academics, and grassroots practitioners to address the dual crises of declining child sex ratios and procedural bottlenecks in institutional adoption.

In Indian society, deeply entrenched patriarchal norms continue to affect reproductive attitudes and child-rearing practices. Pervasive social practices, such as dowry, have historically reinforced the perception of daughters as financial liabilities, giving rise to cultural notions like ‘Paraya Dhan’ for girls versus ‘Budhape ki Lathi’ for sons.
